Countdown to Merdeka: The Country

This is the first part of series of articles i wanted to publish in conjunction with Malaysia's national day (Merdeka) on 31st August. Before that, i would like to thank z000nie for inspiring me to post something about my country here :)

***

Malaysia was, then called Malaya, obtained her independence from British on 31st August 1957. Still a baby compared to other well-developed nations, nevertheless she came a long way since she was born 48 years ago, thanks to initiatives taken by our beloved and most remembered former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammad.

In this first part, i would like to share with you some basic information about my country. Hope it will be beneficial for all..

Malaysia, home to 26 million people, can be divided to Peninsular Malaysia and West Malaysia. An active member of various international organization, Malaysia is one of the most developed nation in South East Asia..

This is where Malaysia is situated in South East Asia, for those who are not aware :P

Malaysia consists of 13 states and one Federal Territory (which actually consists of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya). This is reflected in our flag, the Jalur Gemilang, which prides 14 red-white strips...

Jalur Gemilang, the pride of every Malaysian citizen..you can find it exhibited on vehicles, premises and even in homes in the month of August every year..Malaysia Boleh!!

Although Islam is our official religion, Malaysia is a secular nation and everyone has their rights to practice their own religion in peace :).. We have Chinese visiting Indian temples and vice versa..
Our national flower, Hibiscus

To date, Malaysia had produce her own national cars, namely under the banner of Proton and Perodua..They are our pride :)

Proton Perdana being launched by Tun Dr. Mahathir

and..i own a Perodua Kancil..looks like this but in silver colour :P

In the next article, i will be giving some information on the people residing in Malaysia, their respective culture and festivals..Hope you will enjoy reading them..

wow very informative introductory post on Malaysia...thanks!

These British have been stealing everyone's land lol! Sri Lanka was under British regime for many years b4 we got our Independence in 1948. But we got benefited from being under the British too. Such as great road systems and the English language :)

Viva Forever Malaysia!

@ st000nie - i will be choooo happy to welcome you back here dear..

hibiscus = bunga raya

hari raya = ramdhan festival

hehehe..u mixed up the two terms

but other Malay words were correct :P

@ icey - awww..thats Petronas Twin Tower...i will be posting about landmarks in Malaysia soon..it will consist of this twin tower as well..i will joining you when you come down to Kuala Lumpur :)

@ k000kie - thank you dear...well, my grandparents used to say..the country was far more better under British compared during Japanese occupation..which saw Chinese in Malaya being tortured and killed :( nevertheless, nothing beats the freedom we have now!!

@ vivhyd - let me explain this issue..

actually it happened during a police crackdown on illegal immigrants in Malaysia few months back..

the place where these Indians were staying was harbouring a lot of illegals..

during the raid, the police didn't check the particulars of the immigrants one by one..instead, brought them all to the police base and set up an inquiry there..

those with legal documents were then released..however,Indian professionals immediately complained to the embassy and the issue was then blown out of proportion..

this is certainly not an exercise to humiliate Indians..we, in fact, welcome foreign professionals to work in our country, even to the extend of giving PR status to those to deliver..

Malaysian government had since apologised to Indian government on this matter
