Countdown to Merdeka: The People

In this second part of the Merdeka Series, i would like to touch on the people of Malaysia, their culture, festival which may sound unique...

***
The people are of various races..and practically, the issue of caste is almost non-existence here..its whether you are a Malay, a Chinese, an Indian or an aborigine..That's about it..

Malays and the aborigines are called bumiputeras and they are the first people arrive in this piece of land..As such, they are given certain privileges according to our constitution..

Chinese and Indians are those who migrated from their respective countries to Malaya during British rule..they were then given citizenship when Malaysia obtain her independence..now, we are citizens of Malaysia..and enjoy privileges as the birth-right citizen of Malaysia..My greatgrandparents came to Malaya during British rule, and they were given citizenship..i am the 4th generation of my family in Malaysia..

There are some special kind of communities residing in Malaysia..Baba-Nyonya for example..these are the Chinese people who came to Malaya in 18th and 19th century to trade in a state call Malacca..they got married to the locals and settle here..
Replica of Baba-Nyonya wedding..make sure you visit their museum in Malacca

***
Now about our various festival throughout the year..Usually, we will celebrate Chinese New Year in January or February..too bad that Malaysian government had decided to ban the use of firecrackers during festivals :( i miss them so much..but we still get to watch the lion dance during CNY..

Then, comes to Thaipusam..this is the second grandest Indian festival celebrated in Malaysia..Batu Caves in Selangor; Thannir Malai in Penang; Kallu Malai in Perak..these are the places of worship which will be crowded during Thaipusam..We even have Chinese devotees taking part in this festival.. I think we are only country in the world celebrating Thaipusam in grand scale..Below some pics from internet..
Taken inside Batu Caves, its a temple inside a cave...u need to climb 272 to reach the main temple..

Who dares to puncture him/herself like this..raise your hands please!!

Devotee cracking coconuts..this is like a ritual by itself especially in Penang..government having tough time advising people to save the coconuts :P

Hari Raya Aidilfitri..must be the grandest festival celebrated in Malaysia, thanks to its Malay-majority..I think most of you guys knew about this festival..celebrated as a victory of fast in the month of Ramadhan..

Deepavali (Diwali) is our grandest Indian festival..not only celebrated by Indians but whole Malaysia as well..you get to see kolam being drawn in almost all shopping complexes..i even had drawn kolam (made of colored rice) in a shopping complex..

This a kolam i was drawing (half-way done) in a shopping complex..edited myself and others out

Christmas is also celebrated here..But in a smaller scale :) Other than that, in East Malaysia, we also have few festivals celebrated by the aborigines..for example, Gawai festival..something similar to thanksgiving..

Next post will be about various landmarks in Malaysia..surely going to talk about Twin Tower..a place Icey wanted to go :P

@ m000nie - at last, i get to see your comment first :P yea..we do celebrate diwali..and it's the grandest Indian festival in Malaysia..we even start shopping for diwali a month earlier!!

@ ..pari - Thaipusam is a religious festival for Lord Muruga..its the time the devotees fullfil their vows..some carry decorative "kavadi" on their shoulders; some puncture themselves (just like in the pic in my post)..it is celebrated in Lord Muruga's temples..especially the one shown the post..Batu Caves..we got a temple inside the cave..a place you surely need to pay a visit if you come down to Malaysia :)

@ avik - this time you are third..not bad :) well..Baba-Nyonya community can only be found in Malacca, the historical state in Malaysia..they boast a mixture of Malay and Chinese culture, and still following the tradition..

@ keshi - my pic is on the way..hmm..will i have yours too?
