Celebrate PONGGAL with ME

Ponggal synonymous with thanksgiving festival of South Indians usually celebrated in a grand manner (as relative to other Hindu/Tamil festivals) only secondary to Deepavali..Yes, we do celebrate it every year but I wonder if my buddies from Northen India are celebrating a similar harvest festival with a different name..

Its a 5,000 year old harvest tradition and actually a 4-day festival..starts with Bhogi on the first day, that is today..my read up in the internet showed that Bhogi is when we pay homage to Lord Indra, the provider of rain..but we in Malaysia seldom talks about Lord Indra anyway..on this day, we clean up our house and burn the unnecesary stuffs..also literally means spirtually cleansing oneself from evil and bad elements prior to celebration of Surya ponggal on the second day..

On the second day we offer our prayers to Sun God for providing us (farmers) with sunshine, which subsequently lead to the harvest (i'm talking about paddy here)..by tradition, rice is boiled in milk outdoors in an earthenware pot...although there are people still following the tradition in Malaysia, hectic schedule and the fact that Ponggal is not a public holiday lead to an indoor-Ponggal festival :) Beautiful rangoli kolam normally drawn at the side where ponggal (the rice pot) is cooked or at the entrance of the house..

Maatu (cow) ponggal is where we offer our thanksgiving to the cattles, which helped the farmers to plough the earth..here, not everyone rears cows..so, it is a festival limited to those with cattles..But the last (and the best) will be Kanni ponggal..lolz..thats when unmarried girls would cook ponggal in the temples (nowadays, mostly in home)..also known to some as Kanum ponggal where people visits each other's home..

Enough of (boring) facts..what i'm looking forward is..ponggal (sweetened-rice) that will be cooked by mom on 14th...will try to post if i manage to click pictures of our ponggal festival..but no promises..

Between, there will be going to be a HUGE ponggal festival at the base of KL Tower..click this news out..

happy ponggal! i can`t wait for thaipusam, as i don`t attend the celebration often. i`ve only gone to temple to see the kavadis like about 4 times in 24 years. yeah, sad, i know. this year i`ll be following my sweetie to his hometown, where the celebration is huge.
