The Namesake

Chumma Talk: Working on a new theme for tulipspeaks. Turned out to be more complicated than I thought.

***

Warning: This is not a review of the movie by Mira Nair which had the same title of this post.

It was Sunday morning and I was catching up with the Saturday newspaper, while waiting for the day's paper. I know it's lame but I only read the hard copies of mainstream newspapers during the weekend and that is mainly for the 'other stories' which they publish. Other here means any other articles apart from current national news. I have better options for that, you see.. :P

Going back to the newspaper story...

I came across this good article written by one Ms Brenda Benedict entitled What's in a name. It was written in a light note but she did spark some interest in me about.. well, what else if not NAMES? :-)

I don't know why I was named Amutha BUT I know the drama behind it. Being the first child has it's pros and cons. One of the pros - you are automatically became the golden child and one the cons - everyone wants to name you! At least that is what Mom told me. This drama happened when I was still in the hospital. Apparently when I was born, my Dad's family selected a name for me and so did my Mom's side. Mom and Dad had an argument in the hospital itself on which name to be given to me. Mom even threatened to leave me in the hospital if Dad didn't agree to the name of her choice!!! *sigh And finally Dad left the room saying "She will bear the name that I'm gonna give. That's it". Mom must be very anxious then, right?

I was named Amutha, my Mom's chosen name.

Between, the other name was Aripriya.

Do you guys know the reason or the drama behind your name? If yes, share it here with me. If no, just go and find out la! :P

Nice blog. Was sort of surfing petalingstreet.org when I saw the title "Namesake". Initially thought it was the Jhumpa Lahiri book..hehe

Ha haa...That's always there. I was named Sandhya, after picking up most of the letters/syllables from my grandparent's names. I still haven't figured out what are they actually trying to convey by naming kids after their grandparents...

people normally said, anak bongsu anak manja.. actually it is not true at all. THe first baby is the more di-sayang-kan.

Even though me anak manja, but compare to my first anne, i less disayangkan.. Padahal, i'm the one who help my parents alot.. aarrgghhhh.. UNFAIR WORLD. :P
