Nostalgic Friday 43: how nostalgic this can be?

Friday, June 13, 2008

Finally I got the photos from the organizers! :) You may want to read my previous post about the award I received from the Society HERE. Okie okie.. nothing much there except for a photo, which summarised the whole thing.

Maybe now I can brag elaborate a bit about it. It was an award for the Best Postgraduate Student@Postgrad Prize in the field of nutrition given by the Nutrition Society of Malaysia. Its an annual thingy and each year max 3 master graduates and max 3 PhD graduates will be selected nationwide for the award. This year, 3 master graduates and only 1 PhD graduate were selected. The award comes with a certificate and some handy cash prize as well :D

NSM best postgrad award
Award was given by the Founder of NSM - Dr Choong. Current President, Dr Tee is at the far left.

NSM best postgrad award
Proud moment to be cherished for a very long time *grins*

Maybe I should have acted rude and said 'no, i don't want an award which single just nutritionists from the rest of the world'. Some gestures are meant to be accepted with pride, and I feel honoured to walk up that stage for the second time (first was for my BSc) in my career. Oh boy, I'll sleep well tonite.

Besides, my little sister has revived her blog again. Hopefully it will last this time *grins again* This week's Nostalgic Friday is dedicated to her and her "she-shines":

Venillave with a little twist :)

Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend!

Shopping spree in GISF 2008

Tuesday, June 10, 2008

I had a mega-shopping spree last Saturday. Mega not because I bought lot of stuff but also I did it all in a record time of 2 hours (*wink wink)! It was Global Indian Shopping Festival (GISF) time again but I have no pictures to share this time. You may want to check out the previous post on GISF.

Now that I have started to live in 'budget' due to the fact that I have a Kancil to feed, let me go through stuffs that I bought and the price:
(P/S: 'budget' here refers to lower amount to be spent on shopping and other luxury spending. The use of the term 'budget' may vary according individuals )

  • 1 white-turquoise sequined saree - RM95
  • 3 kurti tops for aunt - RM 30
  • 1 kurti top for me - RM10
  • 2 kurti tops for sis - RM20
  • tit-bits - RM10
  • indian sweets - RM14
  • 3 sequined/embroidered bags -RM65
So, in total = RM244 + RM3 (parking ticket).

But the satisfaction that I get = priceless!! :P

A perfectionist, I am

Monday, June 02, 2008

I can't stand disorganized work place.
I need to clean my room every week without fail.
I fold clothes and even plastic bags carefully.
I make sure all my pens have caps.
Every single document is carefully arranged on my desk.
The rubbish bin needs to be emptied everyday.
I read everything I type at least twice before sending it off.

And of course I got pissed when the Internet connection not even close to 'perfect'!!! Grrr...

*Specially dedicated to the sucky Internet connection I am facing since the last few days.

Between, here are some pics to cheer everyone up! :P

DSC00150 copy
In the morning while getting ready to campus. Tried miserably to camwhore. No, I can't do it. My worst pic so far :P

DSC00155
My organized workstation. Nah, not for the picture sake. Honestly it is like that everyday! :)

DSC00157
Pc given to me by the School. Yummy wallpaper! Notice my laptop?:D

Okie, you have came across words like 'campus', 'School' etc.. what you think I'm up to? *hint - it has something to do with my new year wishes

Why I love Photoshop

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

I just received photos taken during a wedding dinner from the bride herself. Thanks Kavitha!
The photo was okie but not up to a standard of a professional photographer. Maybe it was prior to editing (hopefully). Whatever the reason is, I look so horrible in it! Then come photoshop to rescue!!

Why I love Photoshop

What a difference!
I may not be a professional photographer or a designer, and what I know is very little compared to many of you. Looking carefully, the yellow colour in the bride's saree turned out to be too bright. But then, something is always better than nothing right?

Now you know why I love Photoshop?

Between, if you have any tips on photo editing, do share them here. I wanna learn too! :)

Mindsblog's Gathering 15.03.08

Tuesday, March 18, 2008

15.03.08 was our very first gathering for MINDSBLOG. Our real idea was to have a small party celebrating the victory of Barisan Rakyat :P, but somehow the idea got evolved and turned out to be a gathering of admin, authors and readers of MINDSBLOG. That would explain the short notice. Nevertheless, I thank everyone who attended the event.

First to be in Naga's were Mahen and Raaja. Oh yea, don't miss Mahen with his new look (without mustache) - he really shocked Praveen and me. We were just catching up with some stuff when Raj showed up. Then, Mathavan (blog reader), Saravanan, Puvanan and Kavilan showed up. Praveen was late, and I still feel we didn't bully her enough (as a punishment). Ponnu escape! Then another two blog readers joined us. JD joined us up a bit later - after the lunch.

MINDSBLOG - Gathering

It was already 1.30pm when we started with our lunch. Most of us took chicken briyani rice, some took mixed rice but some just refused to give in to the temptation, and just stick with their drinks.

MINDSBLOG - Gathering

Okie, it was not all about food - just in case if you are wondering. The food was just the first part of the gathering :P. We discussed about MINDSBLOG's future plan, and I was delighted that everyone had something to share. Seriously in real, you guys are as good as behind those blogs.

I'm not very sure if I am actually allowed to post the entire discussion here, suffice to say that we have decided on:
  • opening up the registration for subcribers/members of MINDSBLOG
  • new terms to qualify as an author of MINDSBLOG
  • creating a customized t-shirt for MINDSBLOG
  • an ambitious large-scale charity project
The idea of creating MINDSBLOG was not just to bring Malaysian Indian Bloggers (MIB) closer, but also to give back something to our community. Behind all that fun and laughter, we want to show we are a group of serious young adults who are capable as well.

MINDSBLOG - Gathering

Thanks again guys, and to those who missed this first gathering, make sure you guys spare sometime for the next one.

Monday, February 11, 2008

I seriously need to start blog hopping before being hit by gun shot :P. Will have to find a helmet before starting my journey to my blogmates's space.. hehehe.. Anyway, sorry guys.. I know it has been long time since I visited anyone. My schedule is packed. Nowadays it takes me two or three days to complete one single post in tulispeaks! Wish I could have a 'normal' life like others.

Complaints apart, I manage to sneak some time off to attend a Cultural Nite (MKSP) by my (ex) Hindu Society of Universiti Putra Malaysia on Saturday. Its an annual event I don't dare to miss. Sharing some pics from the event:

me in light curls

I had a hair cut yesterday. Not a drastic change, though I cut it layers and curled it slightly. The curls are temporary bcoz I wasn't so sure if it will look fine to me. The previous temporary curls I did was horrible. Now testing it with my senior hairstylist. Wanna check out what the majority says before I make it permanent. What do you say?

Among songs I love to hear again and again. Kinda cute I think.

Nostalgic Friday - 27

lotus

We have a small man-made pond in my garden. Mom and bro being pet lovers, have at least 30 koi in it. Don't ask me how, they just grew up in harmony with two pots of lotus plants. Occasionally we have lotus blooming in there, and this morning I saw this flower. Pretty nah?

This is my fav background score by Illayaraja. No lyrics, no annoying voices.. just beautiful music that bring you to another world.

Have a great weekend everyone!

my Darling

Tuesday, December 18, 2007

After breaking up with my ex-boyfriend, I immediately found myself attracted to this hunk. Hopefully this is not a rebound relationship. I long for him to stay with me for a long long time.I wanna live happily ever after with him - ala the fairy tales.

This time around I was more careful with my choice. Not to say I did mistake in choosing my ex, but right now there are so many 'hunks' around!!! I was spoilt for choices!! Thankfully I had my friends and sister with me, while I made the important decision.

He is fondly called Aspire 4720G.

Aspire 4720G

He has his pros and may be I am deeply in love with him to 'see' his cons (if there is any) :P Not many girlfriends will be able to list down their boyfriend's pros, guess I am an exception. My darling comes in an opalesque shape and is equipped with:

1+2 year International Limited Warranty

Aspire 4720G

Well, I don't understand half of his specifications, but who cares? He looks good and so far he works pretty well too.

He cost me RM3,488 (USD 1,041), and about an hour after charging my card with that amount, I got a phone call from the bank.

voice: Good afternoon miss. I just would like to verify if you have charged RM3k+ to your Mastercard an hour ago?

ammu: Yes, that's right (obviously gal!!! my hunk set me back by 3.5K.. but he is worth it)

voice: Thank you for the confirmation, miss. Have a nice day. (hung up)

Good guys come with a price.

National Indian Youth Convention 2007

Monday, December 03, 2007

The weekend was a busy one. Saturday was spent in this convention, while Sunday was spent loitering in a mall meeting fellow blogmates.

Speaking about the convention, I think it is one of the best event organized for Malaysian Indian youth in this year. It was well-organized despite the fact that this is a maiden convention of this sort. This post will be a small re-cap of National Indian Youth Convention (NIYC 2007), just to highlight it to those who have missed it. And no, this is not a paid posting.

It started a little late than what is scheduled - that was a minor setback though I must stress that it was all worth the wait. After opening speech by the President of TheMind (the organization which organized NIYC 2007), the convention was then officially launched by Prof Dr Bala Shanmugam.

NIYC 2007
My tag for the day

One thing that pulled me to register for the event will be their list of amazing personalities. Some were unknown to me, but boast a credible CV! The keynote address for example, was given by Tan Sri Dato's Professor Emeritus Dr Gajaraj Dhanarajan, the VC of Wawasan Open University. This soft spoken speaker brought us back to world war era when he spoke about his history and right up to current technological advancement, where he emphasized us not to confine ourselves to the borders of Malaysia.

We had three more talks in line after that. The first talk was given by Major General (R) Dato' Pahlawan Dr Mohanadas Ramasamy, who spoke about challenges of succeeding in the government services. I don't think many of M'sian Indian youths are interested to even join the civil service, let alone to be successful in it. Good to see that there are some people from our community made it huge in the sector we all tend to avoid.

NIYC 2007
The speakers

The next speaker was the highlight of the whole convention. Most of us waited since morning only to listen to his talk. Not to undermine the other speakers, but I must say this Datuk will outshine anyone excerpt may be Tan Sri Ananda Krishnan). He was none other than Datuk Vinod Sekhar, the second richest Indian in Malaysia. It was a fun-filled talk, and the fact that his business idea started with just USD50 amazed a lot of people. We had flood of questions from the floor for which he patiently answered. I couldn't agree more when he said this country a wonderful place and worth fighting for :)

The third talk was given again by Prof Bala Shanmugam. One thing that I like to listen will be successful personalities' life story, and Prof Bala is a master in it! Didn't know he is actually with Monash University, where I am working for a year now! That's a shame.. *sigh. He ended the talk with an interesting quote which I saw many of the participants taking down: "Aspire to Inspire before you Expire".

NIYC 2007
Full house in NIYC 2007

If there is something I was unhappy with the convention, that would be the forum. Not because it was not good, because I feel the forum panellists where not well-utilised. Probably the organizers were running out of time as it was already towards the end of the convention, but I feel the forum should have more substance in it as I know it is not easy to gather such a prominent panel. We had Prof Emeritus Dr Singaravelu (University Malaya), Assoc Prof Dr Sureswaran (Mlabs System), Datuk Suret Singh (Ministry of Transport) and Mr Uthaya Sankar (RTM) in the panel while Prof Dr Subramaniam (University Malaya) moderated the forum. May be if the forum was given a specific theme and all discussion pointed towards the theme/title, it would have been more effective.

NIYC 2007
The forum

Overall, despite the minor short coming, I would say the convention was a successful one. As I said before, it is one of the best event for the year and should be held annually. For the organizing committee, I would like to thank them and wish them all the best!

A Wedding & I

Monday, November 26, 2007

No I am not getting married. At least, that's not what I'm going to write here, and doesn't mean I will never write about it here :p.

I think its wedding season all over the world right now. Even Keshi has blogged about weddings.. and I think if I dwell more on wedding-relationship-marriage, it would be a copycat of her post! hehehehe..

a photo of their bridal photo :P

I attended my friend's wedding dinner yesterday. So much for the chaos in the capital in the last few days, plan to attend her wedding was cancelled and I resorted to attend the wedding dinner instead. Such a pity, because I really wanted to attend the wedding not the dinner!!! I never liked wedding dinners, though many prefer to attend it instead of the real wedding ceremony itself. For one, I hate parading myself seeing people parading themselves over and over again. Plus, I think by attending the ceremony means much more for the couple, and the attendees as well. Witnessing a man and woman promising to be there for each other forever is more significant than just watching them savouring grilled chicken over the dinner! Anyway, in this case I didn't have much choice. I knew the bride & the groom from my university days (that's about 7 years!) and I got no excuse to skip the event.

the dinner hall decor
The hall

Dinner supposely to start at 7.30pm & yours truly reached the venue at 8pm.. but the function has not started yet! Hmm.. okie may be they are waiting for more people, my stomach started to make funny noises, boredom started to set in but lucky for me, sister was there entertaining talking to me. Pheww!!

jacob-komathi
The couple again

A friend came in few minutes later and guess what happens when two old friends meets?? We were chit-chatting and posing for the photos till the event start.

usha-me
Usha & me

Then its the usual stuff - cake cutting, photos, dinner, more photos, identifying other uni mates and more photos. By the time when I came back home, I was dead tired - tired of talking & eating!

sister & me - before leaving
It will be incomplete if we didn't take this shot before leaving! :p

So, how was your Sunday?
